Intro

The Small-Leaved Myrtle (Myrtus communis 'Microphylla') is a compact, evergreen shrub known for its dense foliage, aromatic leaves, and small white blossoms followed by bluish-black berries. As a bonsai, it offers fine twigging, a lush green canopy, and year-round visual interest. Its natural tolerance for pruning and styling makes it an excellent species for refinement and detailed branch structure.

Care Instructions

Light

  • Prefers full sun to partial shade, with brighter light encouraging tighter foliage and flowering.
  • Can tolerate filtered sunlight but avoid deep shade as it may reduce vigor and increase internode length.
  • Ensure at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal health and ramification.

Watering

  • Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
  • Water thoroughly when the top layer begins to dry.
  • Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely, especially in warm weather.
  • Well-draining soil is essential to prevent root rot.

Temperature & Climate

  • Thrives in mild to warm climates and is best suited for Mediterranean or temperate regions.
  • Hardy to light frost but should be protected from prolonged freezing.
  • Evergreen in most climates, but may drop some leaves in response to stress or cold.

Pruning

  • Responds well to regular pruning and shaping throughout the growing season.
  • Structural pruning is best done in late winter or early spring.
  • Pinch or trim back new growth to encourage branching and maintain shape.
  • Flowers appear on new growth, so prune after flowering for best results.

Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years in early spring before active growth resumes.
  • Tolerates moderate root pruning.
  • Use a slightly moisture-retentive but well-draining mix, such as akadama with pumice and a touch of organic matter.

Seasonal Tips

Spring: Begin pruning and repot if needed. Fertilize regularly to support strong new growth.

Summer: Maintain consistent watering. Trim to refine branching. Watch for flowering and adjust pruning accordingly.

Autumn: Reduce feeding. Monitor for pests. Prepare protection if frost is expected.

Winter: Minimal watering needed. Protect from frost and cold drafts. Consider overwintering indoors in colder zones.

Companion Moss & Plants

  • Pairs well with soft mosses like sheet moss or fern moss for a lush forest feel.
  • Small, humidity-loving companions like miniature ferns or baby tears (Soleirolia) work well in cooler settings.
  • Ensure airflow to prevent mold or mildew under dense foliage.

Display Suggestions

  • Best presented in shallow, round or oval pots with muted green or cream glazes.
  • Excellent for informal upright, broom, or multi-trunk styles.
  • Display with smooth pebbles, moss, or a mossy forest floor theme to emphasize its evergreen character.
  • Ideal for patios or bright balconies where its aroma and foliage can be appreciated up close.
